Implants
What are they?

Implants provide a revolutionary way of replacing missing teeth. The dental implant is kind of post which is surgically implanted into the jaw. They are made from Titanium, which is an extremely strong, light weight metal. Titanium does not react with the bodies tissues which makes it ideal for use in this way. Once inserted a bespoke prosthetic tooth, tailor-made by a dental technician, is attached. Multiple implants can be used to retain several crowns or bridges. They can also be used to retain dentures for those who are missing many or all of their teeth.

What are the benefits?

All other methods of replacing missing teeth have drawbacks. Crowns and bridges retained on natural teeth require extensive tooth preparation which can damage the teeth and ultimately result in the loss of more teeth. Dentures can be used to replace multiple gaps but can be uncomfortable and difficult to wear. They can be easily dislodged meaning many types of food just can't be tackled. Implant retained teeth can be used much more like your own teeth without causing any damage to other teeth.

Will people know I have implants?

Only if you tell them. If you have a single tooth or multiple teeth replaced with implant retained crowns and bridges they will meet your gum like a normal tooth. They are made from such high quality materials that they look exactly like real teeth. Similarly, if you have a denture retained by implants, they will look like natural teeth. So, no one will know!

Are implants for me?

Well, if you have missing teeth, they probably are. However, not everyone is suitable and our implantologist will discuss any potential implant treatment and the pros and cons with you. Simply contact the practice to make a consultation appointment. In brief, you must have a healthy mouth, and any diseased teeth and gums must be treated first. You will be assessed by the implantologist to make sure you have enough jawbone for the implants. Once your implant treatment is complete, you must continue to maintain good mouth hygiene and visit the dentist regularly. It is also important that you are in good general health. Smoking and certain diseases can affect healing and make failure of the implants more likely.

Are implants done by a general dentist?

No. Our implantologist is Dr Jorge Cano. He is a University specialist in implants at the prestigious University of Madrid and also owns his own implant practice in Spain. He is a dentist who has undergone extensive postgraduate training in implantology including a Masters degree and PhD.
